The medieval man-at-arms was a stalwart and dependable fighter who exhibited great martial prowess with a range of weapons. He was the veteran of many conflicts and was often first into the fray. Although he was not a Knight, he fought and trained alongside them as a brother in arms. To honor these rugged, salt-of-the-earth warriors, Cold Steel® has created a range of true journeyman's weapons called the Man at Arms Collection. These battle-ready weapons may lack the gleaming blades and polished silver steelwork of Cold Steel®'s high-end weapons, but they are quite similar in quality and performance. The fully sharpened and blued blades have a distinctive gun metal finish that complements the black handles. And when well-oiled, they are gleamingly beautiful in their own right. The Man at Arms collection features a selection of some of Cold Steel®'s finest blades, but at a markedly reduced price. If you always wanted a Cold Steel® piece but couldn't afford one, this collection is made for you.
Designed by noted swordsman Luke LaFontaine and bearing his name, the LaFontaine Sword of War combines elements of a 16th Century Sword of War with a Complex Hilt Longsword. It was not carried on a belt or baldric, but rather held in hand, rested on the shoulder or simply carried by a manservant or page. Designed primarily for battlefield combat, it was almost as big as a Zweihander or a Great Sword, with a long double-edged blade, elaborate ring guards, counter guards and peaked quillons, a closed ricasso for looping a finger through the cross for added control, and a heavy counterbalancing pommel that made a fearsome weapon in its own right! A versatile and complex weapon with many advantages that should be apparent to any Historical European Martial Artist, it was also a symbol of prestige that said much about the status and prowess of its wielder.
Made in Cold Steel®'s signature Man at Arms style, the LaFontaine Sword of War features a 1050 high carbon steel blade that has been deeply blued to an inky black sheen. It is fully sharpened and supplied complete with a thick leather and steel scabbard.

Surprisingly Impressive
I bought this on a whim because of the price. I wasn't sure about the black finish, which is actually bluing rather than paint or epoxy. But the finish turned out to be quite nice. The sword has the expected weight and seems well balanced. The guard is intricate but well-made. Fit and finish are excellent, with everything tight and properly aligned, no rattling. I haven't tried cutting with it yet due to poor weather, but it arrived sharp enough for its size. The blade has some flexibility, but not much. Overall, it exceeded my expectations.
Good Value Sword
The sword's hilt is particularly appealing to me. Overall, it has a pleasing appearance. Despite my extensive collection, this sword, while nice to look at, feels somewhat unresponsive during use. However, this does not affect its purpose and is reasonable for its price.
Admire This Sword
I love the La Fontaine Sword of War since I am passionate about German long sword fighting. While the sword is heavy, it is exceptionally well balanced, making it easy to handle with one or two hands, although two hands are recommended. The blade is both sharp and durable. The intricate hilt is particularly appealing as it protects the hand from an opponent's blade and allows for various grips or catching the opponent's weapon. The only drawback is that my shorter height (5'8") sometimes causes the blade to scrape the ground during upward cuts, but this isn't a fault of the sword itself. Ideally, I'd prefer this sword to be 4 inches shorter, with 2 inches less on the blade and handle, to better suit my frame. Cold Steel makes excellent products!
