Product information "MAA Messer"
Cold Steel® Man at Arms (MAA) Messer

The medieval man-at-arms was a stalwart and dependable fighter who exhibited great martial prowess with a range of weapons. He was the veteran of many conflicts and was often first into the fray. Although he was not a Knight, he fought and trained alongside them as a brother in arms. To honor these rugged, salt-of-the-earth warriors, Cold Steel® has created a range of true journeyman's weapons called the Man at Arms Collection. These battle-ready weapons may lack the gleaming blades and polished silver steelwork of Cold Steel®'s high-end weapons, but they are quite similar in quality and performance. The fully sharpened and blued blades have a distinctive gun metal finish that complements the black handles. And when well-oiled, they are gleamingly beautiful in their own right. The Man at Arms collection features a selection of some of Cold Steel®'s finest blades, but at a markedly reduced price. If you always wanted a Cold Steel® piece but couldn't afford one, this collection is made for you.

Designed by Luke LaFontaine and Dave Baker, Cold Steel®'s new one-handed Messer is a sword that just has to be held to be appreciated! This modern interpretation of the historical German Langes Messer (or Long Knife) is beautifully balanced and a joy to use. Thinner and lighter than many of Cold Steel®'s current offerings, it handles almost like a giant Bowie knife! Its clip-point style blade is fully sharpened on the primary edge, with an un-sharpened 'false edge' terminating in a sturdy upswept point. The Messer's stylish and functional cross-guard, knuckle bow and pronounced shell-shaped Nagel are also blued to match the blade and enhance the rich brown of the Malaysian sal wood handle scales.

Complete with a black leather scabbard with blued fittings, this beautiful new addition to Cold Steel®'s Man at Arms series has already become a firm favorite with Cold Steel®'s crew and will be a popular addition to your collection!

1090 High Carbon Steel
1090 high carbon steel is an excellent choice for larger fixed blades. It takes and holds a good edge while remaining tough enough to withstand even Cold Steel®'s brutal stress tests. It is a good all-around performance high carbon steel that is very forgiving under shock.

Affordable Quality

Had to sharpen it myself as the factory edge was a bit rough. The wooden handle came with a crack, but it doesn't impact its use. The last two inches of the tip are slightly bent to one side, but the blade is well-tempered; it springs back when I try to straighten it. The handguard hits my knuckles if I hold it normally. Overall, I'm happy with its light weight, speed, and menacing appearance!

Great for Modern Use!

I've wanted one of these for a long time and finally got it, so keep that in mind. Initially skeptical due to some negative comments, I was impressed by its balance and weight. As a seasoned HEMA practitioner, transitioning into guards was seamless. Cutting water bottles (since I don't have tatami mats) was effortless. It's a bit shorter than the Messer I'm used to, but I adjusted. The grease and packaging didn't bother me since it protected against rust. If scratched, I'll just use a bluing kit meant for firearms. It's more suited for modern combat than historical collecting. Perfect for a tactical vest, and maybe pair it with a buckler!

Great Sword

This sword is light, fast, and cuts well. Everything is secure on the handle and guard. I own several Cold Steel swords, both medieval and Chinese, and I'm very pleased with all of them.
